It occurs to me that you might find this question insulting, but that sort of thing has never stopped me before: how do you keep yourself focused under our current conditions?

[There's a fair delay before his response.]

I assume that you're requesting a list of illicit substances, rather than meditation techniques, if you're coming to me.

[Oh fine then. Beckett sounds tired and ragged, but at least not robotic.]

My apologies. Talking out loud is not my favourite activity right now. You assume correctly, but mostly because I already know meditation techniques. A list as long as my arm. None are doing much anymore.

Of course they're not, meditation is largely useless.

[At least it's always proven to be for wrangling a mind like his.]

It entirely depends on what your exact issue is.

I'll argue that point some other times. Right now I'm mostly concerned with finding some way to maintain focus so I can make connections across large amounts of notes while being constantly interrupted by physical discomfort. Fever. Exhaustion. The like. [He blows out a frustrated breath.] This just isn't how I work.

Then you want a mixture.

[He's doing this as clinically as he can, that way maybe he can pretend that he's not acting as a drug pusher.]

Something like morphine, or another opiate, to quell the symptoms of physical discomfort, but only taken in a small dose to stop further lethargy. Combine it with something like aderall to help bring focus and energy.

[A drug pusher is exactly what Beckett is after. He's not even pretending. As justified means go, this is peanuts.]

Are there further side effects to either of these? I know morphine, but aderall is a new name.

Racing heartbeat, dry mouth, nothing too onerous. Start with low dosages, giving yourself an overdose won't help anyone.

[There's a pause and then--]

I want half of what you get prescribed as a consulting fee.

[It is a perfectly fair demand, and one Beckett would agree to in a heartbeat. Except the logic of it is... off.]

Is there a reason you can't just get your own? Not from Watson, I can see, but I was planning on asking House.

[Truth will probably serve him better than a lie here, for now anyway.]

The admin won't allow anyone to prescribe to me as a known user.

[User, not addict.]

Who is going to get pissed at me if I enable you?

Providing they're not aware it's you? Nobody.

[He probably is, but Beckett has learned paranoia among vampires. And also through Vicodingate.]

Please, Mr. Holmes. There's less than a hundred of us in the town, and our minds are regularly messed with to the point where we have no idea what we might say or do. How long do you think this would stay secret?

[He takes a thoughtful breath in.] I'm not particularly afraid of Watson's righteous anger, but he's been very good to Angel and Rhys. They might need him in the future.

He won't blame Angel and Rhys for anything he's angry at you about, and he wouldn't refuse his help even if he was angry.

[That much is true, John is far too much a doctor for his own good sometimes.

It's Mycroft that Beckett should be more worried about, but Sherlock isn't going to bring up big brother if the vampire isn't.]

[Fortunately or not, Mycroft is not on Beckett's radar. It's not himself he's worried for, after all. And the point about Watson is... very convincing, he has to admit.]

You can guarantee this? That my companions won't be caught in any fallout? You have probably the most influence over poor John than anyone.

I know John better than anyone, and I guarantee he won't hold your companions the least responsible for your actions or mine.

[It's not even a lie, John is a good man like that. He makes no promises that they won't be caught in the fallout from Mycroft.]

[If it's a lie, it's now Sherlock's problem. He'll have to sort out the next Vicodingate. Have fun with that, Sherlock.]

Then we have ourselves a deal. Tell me the appropriate dosage to request, and I'll figure out a way to get half of it to you. Discreetly.

For something like adderall, a standard dose is anywhere between five and sixty milligrams per day; for morphine, five milligrams to one hundred, though that's only in severe cases. I wouldn't ask for a dosage, though, the prescribing doctor will likely decide an appropriate dose to start you on to be less suspicious.

And we wouldn't want suspicion, now would we. [He's still not %100 happy, but backing out from deals is terrible practice.] Would you even benefit at all from what is for me a starting dosage?

I'm not quite the addict that people think I am.
